Reflection of Lux curation- Thursday 27th May 2021

The lux live show went really successfully, and it was great talk all about Freddie's work, down below is the template of questions and main talking points for Freddie's work.

‘a description of your video’

Series of still frame shots, featuring his house plants with the sunlight hitting them directly but also casting this harsh shadow around it, which is really interesting.One of the main reasons why I loved this piece so much was the use of house plants as a green spaces. I also loved the imperfection of this work, the plants are positioned slightly of centre and the work feels very natural and organic

What’s that intentional?

The audio is really powerful and I feel like it really ties the piece together, there’s this overwhelming melancholy through the way you are speaking to us as viewers

Can you tell us about the your reasonings behind the audio ?

I think the clip were you are sitting with you legs crossed on the top right hand corner really adds to this uncomfortable, angst. That is the only part of the price where there is a glimpse of people in this video

Why did you decide to include this in the piece ?

Although I was anxious about being put on the stop and questioned about the whole process of curating, to help relieve that angst I tired to plan every single thing and script it out- which now reflecting back on it I realised that I found to harder to read off a script and felt far more comfortable just answering the questions naturally and as they come. So looking back one this I need to remember that organising and everything to the last final detail isnt necessarily a good thing.

From curating the lux show reel the three of us have written some notes collectively about the process of curating.

Started off by putting videos into general categories- we came up with visual and concept based categories- with a few anomalies that would help to break up the pattern of visuals and concept to keep the audience engaged and to distinguish visual works and more concept based works. A main priority for us was to start and end the showreel with visually engaging works to interest an audience and keep them watching.

Our visual category was broken down into the themes of forests & greenery and the contrast between urban and green spaces- we took into account the concepts behind the latter subcategory, as they started to overlap with the more concept based themes. We used the urban videos to bridge the gap between nature style videos and the ones with more focused messages, creating a smooth transition in the showreel. We wanted to isolate each video and sandwich the categories together so one video wouldn’t overpower the other one. Some students responded to Green Spaces with a sociopolitical outlook, so we created an order that grouped two or more videos rooted in these issues that was then relaxed by visual and lighthearted ones.

We felt this created a natural flow and allowed the viewer to breathe in between more serious ones. For example Some videos like Alejandros that was a response to video games were quite different to all the other ones which made placement very crucial- we didn’t want the surrounding videos to be cast in a shadow. If we had placed it near a political based concept then it would trivialise the important messages behind them. We found that putting these videos in between videos of contrasting speeds and aesthetics served to uplift them- as they each highlighted the focal points in each other.
